WayAhead – Mental Health Association NSW is the oldest mental health advocacy organisation in Australia. Since 1932, it has sought to influence key decision-makers in order to create positive changes in the community. It works in partnership to address the stigma around mental illness and to promote mental health and wellbeing through public education, support and advocacy.

WayAhead does a range of work primarily focused on the provision of mental health information and running anxiety and health promotion programs within NSW. WayAhead provides information and support to mental health consumers, their families and carers, professionals, workplaces and to the general public. WayAhead programs and initiatives include the WayAhead Mental Health Information Line, Anxiety Disorders Information Line, Anxiety Support Groups, WayAhead Workplaces, and Mental Health Month.

WayAhead also maintain the free WayAhead online directory that people can use to search for mental health services in their local area.

BEING is the independent, state-wide peak organisation for people with a lived experience of mental illness (consumers). They work with consumers to achieve and support systemic change. BEING works in the following capacities:

Policy advocacy and consultation: including consumer consultation, submission writing, advising government and developing position statements;

Capacity building for consumers and workplaces: including developing and conducting training programs and other educational resources for consumers, service providers, workplaces and policy makers, raising awareness about consumer issues, engaging in representation and participation at conferences and other relevant fora;

Research: including identifying consumer service needs, best practice for consumer articipation and quality mental health services.

Mental Health Carers NSW (MHCN) is a community managed organisation of and for families and other voluntary carers of people with a lived experience of mental illness, which supports and promotes mutual care and better mental health outcomes across the diverse communities of NSW.

MHCN provides support and advocacy for families and friends of people living with a mental illness or disorder. MHCN reaches out with friendship and understanding to all whose lives are touched by a mental health problem. Their aim is to maintain and improve existing levels of support and crisis resolution to all relatives and friends of people with a mental illness, including connecting families to support services and information, and supporting carers in rural NSW, carers of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander background, carers from non-English speaking backgrounds, and young carers.
